Contrary to widespread belief, the prevalence of cognitive impairment among older Americans decreased by almost 30% from 1993 through 2002, investigators here reported today.

However, for those who developed significant cognitive impairment, the mortality risk remained elevated, Kenneth Langa, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Michigan, and colleagues said in the February issue of Alzheimer's and Dementia.

The accident left Lorraine Jackson with a fractured collarbone and ribs and a wrecked car. It left her daughter Marjorie Jackson with more nagging questions.

Her mom was driving alone to the hair salon when she turned left in front of a car headed in the opposite direction. Police at the scene couldn't explain how the crash happened. Lorraine, then around 72 years old, said she didn't know either.

The back-road shortcut was one her mom had traveled for years. The accident happened during the day. Where and when her mom had decided to turn didn't make sense.

The accident was the first of two wake-up calls that fueled Marjorie's deepening concern about the increasingly odd behaviors she had first noticed in her mom a few years earlier.
